Major roadworks are set to begin on Galo Plaza Lasso Avenue starting April 10, as city authorities move forward with a large-scale rehabilitation project affecting one of the capital’s busiest corridors.
The Municipality of Quito confirmed that approximately seven kilometers of roadway will be resurfaced along the avenue’s side lanes, stretching from the Carcelén Interchange to the El Labrador Interchange.
According to the Metropolitan Public Company of Mobility and Public Works (Epmmop), the project will involve installing high-resistance rigid concrete pavement designed to improve durability and extend the lifespan of the road.
Work will be carried out in two main phases. Crews will first intervene on the north–south side lane, followed by the south–north side lane. Each phase will be divided into multiple sections to help manage traffic flow and minimize disruption.
Authorities said the central lanes—rehabilitated in 2025—will remain open throughout the project to maintain circulation along this key route.
A comprehensive mobility plan will be implemented from day one. This will include signage, alternate routes, detours, contraflow measures, and temporary public transport stops depending on the stage of construction.
The project is expected to impact more than 20 surrounding neighborhoods, including Carcelén Libre, Ponceano Alto, La Ofelia, Parque Bicentenario, La Kennedy, and California Alta. Officials said outreach efforts, including door-to-door information campaigns, will be carried out to keep residents informed.
While the exact timeline for completion has not yet been announced, authorities are urging drivers to plan ahead and expect changes to traffic patterns in northern Quito once work begins.
