The Municipality of Quito has launched a new mobile application designed to modernize how passengers use the city’s public transportation system, as digital payments begin rolling out across the Metro, Trolleybus, and Ecovía networks.
The app, called “Quito nos mueve,” is now available for Android and iOS devices and is intended to streamline access to transportation services while reducing wait times at stations and stops.
Officials said the app allows users to manage their “City Account,” which will serve as the central platform for digital fare payments. Through the app, passengers can top up balances, generate QR codes for fare payment, and track their account activity.
The platform also includes trip-planning tools, enabling users to locate nearby stations and stops, check routes, and find the best way to reach their destinations. In addition, users can link identification documents, such as a national ID card, and connect payment cards to their accounts.
The new system will begin taking effect on April 1, although authorities say implementation will be gradual. Initially, only a limited number of stations will support the new payment method, with full rollout expected by the end of April.
Alongside the app, the city has introduced new physical “City Cards” for those who prefer or require card-based payment. Fares remain tiered, with general users paying $0.35, while discounted rates apply for students, seniors, and people with disabilities.
The cards will be available at key transport hubs, including major Metro stations and bus terminals across the city.
Municipal officials say the new system is part of a broader effort to modernize Quito’s transportation network, improve efficiency, and provide users with more flexible and accessible payment options.
The rollout marks a significant shift in how residents and visitors interact with the city’s public transit system, moving toward a more digital and integrated model of mobility.
