Authorities in Quito expanded inspections of dental clinics following the death of a patient during a procedure, resulting in the closure of two additional facilities due to serious health violations.

The Agency for Quality Assurance of Health Services and Prepaid Medicine (ACESS) reported that it inspected a branch of the clinic linked to the death, located in Cumbayá, to verify compliance with health regulations.

During the inspection, officials found multiple irregularities, including expired and unlabeled medications, improper handling of controlled substances, and medical products stored alongside food. Authorities also discovered open botulinum toxin and serum containers kept in a kitchen refrigerator.

ACESS reported that 171 medications and medical supplies were seized. Inspectors also identified the presence of equipment and substances associated with cosmetic procedures, raising concerns that services were being performed outside the clinic’s authorized scope.

Additional issues included incomplete medical records, outdated documentation, and the absence of declared X-ray equipment. Based on these findings, authorities ordered the closure of the facility, citing risks to patient health and safety.

As part of the broader investigation, a third dental clinic in the Quitumbe area was also shut down after failing to meet regulatory standards. Inspectors reported a lack of basic biosafety measures, improper storage of supplies, and evidence of cross-contamination in sterilization areas.

Officials also found expired materials, inadequate waste management practices, and unsafe handling of sharp instruments.

Authorities said inspections would continue as part of efforts to ensure compliance with health regulations and protect patients across the city.
