Fourteen aging warehouses from the former Quito airport have been demolished at Bicentennial Park, marking a major step in clearing space for future use in the area.
The structures, located along Amazonas Avenue in northern Quito, had reached the end of their useful life. Work is now focused on removing debris, with the project about 93% complete.
The demolition process took 120 days and involved dismantling metal frameworks and block masonry using heavy equipment. Crews used telescopic cranes, tracked excavators, and oxy-fuel cutting tools, along with smaller equipment.
Key details of the project:
- Approximately 50 workers participated across different phases
- Materials are being sorted, with some recycled and others set aside for potential reuse
- Final cleanup is expected to continue over the coming days
The work is part of a broader effort to recover and improve spaces within Bicentennial Park following the closure of the former airport.
