A carbon monoxide incident in northern Quito left three people affected on Monday, including a baby, after a domestic gas leak inside an apartment.
- Three people affected, including an infant
- Incident reported in the Unión y Progreso sector
- Baby received oxygen therapy
- Faulty water heater regulator identified
Emergency crews responded to the scene, where paramedics provided immediate care to those affected. The infant was treated with oxygen, and all three individuals were evacuated from the apartment.
An inspection of the property found that the water heater regulator was damaged and deteriorated. Crews ventilated the space and used gas detection equipment, confirming the presence of carbon monoxide inside the unit.
The incident adds to a series of similar emergencies in the city. In late February, six people were affected in northern Quito in another carbon monoxide case, requiring a multi-agency response.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of proper installation and maintenance of gas systems. Water heaters should be placed outside the home, and regular inspections are recommended to prevent leaks and exposure.
In case of a suspected gas emergency, residents are urged to contact emergency services immediately.
