Major roadworks have begun on Galo Plaza Lasso Avenue, bringing lane closures, detours, and changes to public transport across one of northern Quito’s busiest corridors.

The project, led by the Metropolitan Public Company of Mobility and Public Works, will cover the stretch between the Carcelén and El Labrador interchanges. Work officially began at 10:00 p.m. on April 10, starting with the section between Juan Barrezueta and De los Cedros streets, which is expected to remain closed for 51 days.

Authorities said the intervention will focus on rebuilding the side lanes using high-resistance concrete, with construction carried out in two phases. The first phase targets the north-to-south side lane, followed by the opposite direction.

During construction, traffic will continue moving with limited capacity:

  • Center lane open for light vehicles only
  • One side lane (south to north) open for light vehicles and public transport

Drivers are being advised to use nearby arteries to avoid congestion:

  • Diego Vásquez de Cepeda Avenue
  • Maestro Avenue
  • Eloy Alfaro Avenue

The underpass toward Nazacota Puente Avenue will remain open, providing a key connection through the area.

Bus routes heading north to south will be temporarily redirected:

  • Continue along Galo Plaza Lasso
  • Turn onto Dalmau Street
  • Proceed via Real Audiencia Avenue
  • Rejoin Galo Plaza Lasso through Luis Tufiño Street

Authorities confirmed that the popular Sunday recreational cycling route along this stretch will be suspended until construction is completed.

The project is expected to improve long-term road durability and traffic flow, but in the short term, drivers and commuters should expect delays and plan routes accordingly.
