Quito’s ‘Pico y Placa’ traffic restriction program remains in effect this Monday, May 11, for vehicles and motorcycles with license plates ending in 1 and 2.
The restrictions apply within the Metropolitan District of Quito during two daily periods:
• 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
• 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
To help ease congestion, the Metropolitan Transit Agency is also operating reversible traffic lanes and contraflow measures on several of the city’s busiest routes, including Velasco Ibarra Avenue, Mariscal Sucre Avenue, the Guayasamín Tunnel, and the General Rumiñahui Highway.
The weekly ‘Pico y Placa’ schedule is organized as follows:
• Monday — plates ending in 1 and 2
• Tuesday — 3 and 4
• Wednesday — 5 and 6
• Thursday — 7 and 8
• Friday — 9 and 0
Drivers who violate the restrictions face escalating fines in 2026.
• First offense — 15% of the Unified Basic Salary, equivalent to USD 72.30
• Second offense — 30%, or USD 144.60
• Third offense — 50%, or USD 241.00
Authorities reminded drivers that restricted vehicles are not permitted to circulate within the designated perimeter during enforcement hours.
