Partial road closures began Thursday on the Pan-American Highway North in northern Quito as crews start road rehabilitation work on the service lanes.

The project is being carried out in two sections and will affect side roads in both directions.

The first work zone covers the southbound side from the overpass at 9 de Agosto Street to Lizardo Becerra Street. Construction in that section is scheduled to continue through June 5.

The second section runs in the opposite direction, from Lizardo Becerra Street to the bridge at 9 de Agosto Street. Work there is expected to last through May 21.

Officials said the central lanes of the highway will remain open during the project, and the overpass at 9 de Agosto Street will continue operating toward Calderón.

Drivers heading south to north are being advised to use Pedro de la Gasca, Carapungo, Landázuri, Bonanza, and José Miguel Guarderas streets as alternate routes.

For northbound travel, recommended alternate roads include Lizardo Becerra, Carapungo, and Colonia streets.

Authorities are urging motorists to allow extra travel time, follow posted signs, and obey instructions from traffic agents to reduce congestion in the area.
