A motorcyclist died Wednesday afternoon after falling beneath a truck on Real Audiencia Avenue in northern Quito.
The crash happened around 3:34 p.m. while the motorcyclist was traveling south to north along the avenue. Preliminary information indicates he may have lost control and fallen onto the roadway before being run over by the rear wheels of a truck traveling in the same direction.
The victim died at the scene.
Traffic investigators responded to collect evidence and review surveillance camera footage from the area as part of the investigation into the cause of the accident.
The truck driver was taken into custody while authorities determine responsibility.
Friends of the victim later identified him as a paramedic who had been returning home after finishing work. They said he had briefly stopped to make a purchase and greet a friend before the fatal collision occurred.
Residents in the area said accidents are common along that stretch of road and called for greater caution from drivers and motorcyclists. Some neighbors noted that motorcycles frequently pass vehicles on the right side near bus stops, creating dangerous situations for both pedestrians and traffic.
Both vehicles involved in the crash were taken to the Metropolitan Transit Agency impound lot while investigators continue examining the case.
