Quito’s “peak and plate” traffic restriction system will return to normal beginning Wednesday, May 6, after municipal authorities and transport operators reached an agreement to restore regular public transportation service.
The restriction will apply to vehicles with license plates ending in 5 and 6, which will not be allowed to circulate within the designated restricted zones during regulated hours.
Officials confirmed that enforcement will resume after the temporary suspension ordered Tuesday amid widespread transportation disruptions across the city.
Drivers who violate the restrictions in 2026 face the following fines:
- First offense: $72.30
- Second offense: $144.60
- Third offense: $241
The restrictions had been suspended after transport operators partially halted service Tuesday morning over disputes related to compensation and transit policies.
The disruption caused major traffic problems and overcrowding throughout Quito, forcing thousands of residents to seek alternate transportation.
Transit authorities said additional officers would continue operating at key congestion points across the city, including El Condado, Carapungo, the Zámbiza roundabout, Ciclista, the tunnels, and El Trébol.
Municipal officials said public transportation service has now resumed normal operations.
