Spirit Airlines has ended all operations and canceled every flight, cutting off routes that connected the United States with several destinations in Latin America, including Ecuador.

The low-cost carrier confirmed it has begun an immediate and orderly shutdown after failing to secure the funding needed to continue. Passengers have been instructed not to go to the airport, and refunds will be issued for tickets already purchased.

Spirit had linked U.S. cities, particularly in Florida, with more than 20 destinations across the region. Its presence in Ecuador provided a low-cost option for travelers, and its exit removes one of the more affordable connections to the United States.

The shutdown follows ongoing financial difficulties. The airline filed for bankruptcy twice in 2025 and had been working toward a restructuring agreement with creditors. However, rising fuel costs linked to conflict in the Middle East left the company without the resources needed to keep operating.

Founded in 1992, the airline built its reputation on budget fares and became a strong competitor on international routes.

Other airlines are beginning to respond, offering alternative fares on routes previously served by Spirit in an effort to reduce disruption for travelers.

The closure also affects thousands of employees, with support efforts underway as the company winds down.
