The temporary suspension of the Quito Metro on Monday, April 20, 2026, has been traced to a switch failure at the Quitumbe station, disrupting service for thousands of users.

In response, councilors Andrés Campaña, Bernardo Abad, and Wilson Merino have called for Juan Carlos Parra, manager of the Quito Metro Company, to appear before the Quito Metropolitan Council. The request has been added as the seventh item on the council’s agenda.

The goal is to clarify what caused the shutdown and to outline a contingency plan to prevent similar disruptions from affecting mobility across the city.

Mayor Muñoz said the investigation is still underway and pointed to possible gaps in how the situation was handled. He requested a review of security camera footage after it showed an individual entering the communications room between midnight and 1:00 a.m., an incident that had not been reported and is now under scrutiny.

Preliminary details suggest the issue began when a switch triggered an alert. Staff followed protocol by heading to the communications room and initiating a system restart. However, the switch did not fully reconnect and remained in standby mode, preventing the system from coming back online.

The mayor emphasized the need to determine what was included in the initial report, whether proper procedures were followed during the restart, and why higher authorities were not informed at the time.
