The family of Gregory Allen Krupa has confirmed that his body was recovered in Quito’s Metropolitan Park after he had been missing for more than a week.

The 39-year-old American businessman was found on April 15 in the area of the La Penitente waterfall, following days of search efforts involving emergency teams and volunteers. His body was located after rescuers followed clues in a remote section of the park, descending more than 70 meters to complete the recovery.

Earlier in the search, a different body had been discovered on April 12, but it was later ruled out as not being Krupa.

Family members indicated that he may have suffered a fall near a waterfall, which could have caused his death.

After the recovery, his remains were released and laid to rest in a private ceremony. A public memorial is planned for next month, when community members will be able to pay their respects.

The family has decided that his remains will stay in Ecuador.

Krupa was known for his work in the country, including operating a dental clinic with a social focus that provided care to people with limited access to services. He also participated in outreach activities and supported community initiatives.

Those close to him described a strong connection to Ecuador, where he lived and worked, as well as a deep affinity for the mountains and the Metropolitan Park area.
