A traffic accident in northern Quito left a car hanging precariously from an overpass on Saturday afternoon, drawing a rapid emergency response but resulting in no reported injuries.

The incident occurred around 3:51 p.m. at the intersection of República and Atahualpa avenues, near the La Carolina area. According to emergency services, the vehicle veered off the roadway, broke through the metal guardrail, and was left partially suspended above the drop.

Images captured by bystanders showed the front of the car hanging in the air, supported only by the damaged barrier.

Firefighters responded quickly to the scene and confirmed that no one inside the vehicle was injured or trapped. Authorities then coordinated the use of a specialized crane to safely remove the car from its position.

Preliminary information from the Metropolitan Transit Agency indicates that speeding was likely a key factor. Investigators said skid marks on the pavement suggest the driver attempted to avoid another vehicle before losing control and crashing into the safety barrier.

The accident led to temporary road closures in the area. Traffic on the Atahualpa overpass was shut down in the east-west direction, while access along República Avenue toward 10 de Agosto Avenue was also restricted as a precaution.

Although the outcome avoided injuries, the incident highlighted the risks associated with high speeds on elevated roadways, particularly in busy urban corridors like those in northern Quito.
