Fuel prices across Ecuador increased starting April 12, marking another adjustment tied to rising global oil costs.
New official prices set the cost of Extra and Ecopaís gasoline at $3.024 per gallon, while diesel rose to $2.962. Super gasoline saw the sharpest jump, reaching $4.57 per gallon. These rates are scheduled to remain in place through May 11.
The increases were widely expected. Local fuel pricing in Ecuador is linked in part to international oil markets, and recent geopolitical tensions have pushed global prices higher. As a result, domestic fuel costs have followed the same upward trend.
Compared with the previous pricing period, the changes are noticeable, though uneven across fuel types. Extra and Ecopaís rose by just over 11 cents per gallon from their prior level of $2.89. Diesel also saw a moderate increase. Super gasoline, however, recorded a much steeper jump, rising from $3.41 to $4.57 per gallon.
For households and businesses, the impact will likely be felt quickly. Transportation costs tend to react first, especially in sectors that depend heavily on fuel, such as delivery services, agriculture, and public transport. In cities like Quito and Cuenca, where daily commuting is already a significant expense, the increase may add pressure to monthly budgets.
Fuel price adjustments in Ecuador are typically reviewed on a monthly basis, meaning further changes could follow depending on how international oil markets evolve. For now, the latest increase reflects a broader pattern seen across many countries, where external factors continue to influence local energy costs.
As with previous adjustments, the longer-term effect will depend on whether global prices stabilize—or continue to climb in the months ahead.
