A large fire broke out Sunday morning at a recycling plant in the Palugo sector, located along the Pifo–Papallacta highway on the eastern edge of Quito, prompting a major emergency response.
The blaze was reported on March 29, with multiple units from the Quito Fire Department deployed to the scene. More than 10 emergency vehicles and at least 25 firefighters are involved in efforts to bring the fire under control.
According to initial reports, the fire is significant in scale, requiring intensive and coordinated firefighting operations. Specialized teams, including a mobile incident command unit and fire investigation personnel, have also been sent to the area to support the response and determine the cause of the blaze.
Authorities said the fire is being closely monitored using a network of strategically placed cameras across the city, allowing officials to track its development in real time.
Despite the size of the fire, no injuries have been reported so far.
The incident has raised concerns due to the location of the facility and the potential risks associated with fires at recycling plants, which can involve flammable materials and produce heavy smoke. Firefighters continue working to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading.
